Greystone Mansion Historic Reforestation

Project type

City Historic Park

Date

2025

Location

Beverly Hills, CA

The Greystone Mansion Reforestation Project in Beverly Hills focuses on restoring the historic estate's landscapes while balancing preservation, ecology, and community value. Recognized alongside landmark properties such as the Biltmore Estate and Hearst Castle, Greystone's grounds are being reimagined through innovative landscape strategies that respect its historic significance while enhancing its long-term resilience
The design introduces a arboretum approach to include native California plants to accelerate biodiversity and create self-sustaining woodlands. Three distinct plant regions are proposed - a Conifer Forest. Oak Woodland, and Seasonal Meadow - each designed to restore ecological function, improve stormwater management. fire management and provide seasonal color and habitat value
Beyond ecological restoration, the project incorporates educational and cultural elements. Interpretive trail signage will highlight Greystone's history, reforestation strategies, and native California plant regions, turning the landscape into an outdoor classroom. The plan also emphasizes erosion control measures such as crushed gravel setbacks, rip rap, and dry creek features to protect the historic mansion and stabilize slopes
Through this work, the City of Beverly Hills and the design team are ensuring that Greystone Mansion remains both a historic landmark and a living, resilient landscape, blending preservation with forward-looking sustainability and public engagement.
